And no I’m not advocating an 18th century style aristocratic model (which also in many ways, sucked). Seriously, a thing can be better than monarchy and not be good

Living conditions were poor in the 19th century, but they were worse in previous centuries and far greater in the 20th century as a direct result of the gains made during the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution is the best thing that’s ever happened to the working class, and it frustrates me to see people saying that it “sucked”. When “we tried your thing” it created the middle class and revolutionised absolutely everything. We should try it again, this time we might eradicate poverty entirely.

I’m not advocating a return to merchantalism, unregulated capitalism caused millions of deaths, and the real creation of the “middle class” (or proletarian paid a decent wage) came after trade unions fought for labor laws and social democratic reforms. What predated unregulated capitalism was not socialism. The shrinking middle class today is because of the dismantling of the 20th century welfare state and repeal of finance and business regulation, soon we’ll be back to the 19th century living conditions wise
