There’s this shitpost going around by someone called ‘jobhaver’ who says that porn will be illegal under communism and I couldn’t disagree more like holy shit it’s just SWERF ideology with a hammer and sickle glued on and fuck that noise

Hey, if you’re open to a gentle, completely non-confrontational discussion about it (and I mean on my end, I don’t want to police your anger, you have every right) I’d be willing to talk out both who she is and what she’s referring to in some more detail. I spoke with her personally about it as a friend, having many of the same issues you’re likely referring to and got clarification I was looking for. You might not find it compelling, and that’s also completely fair, but it’s an open offer, and I do not ever respond to people with toxicity if that’s a concern you’d have.

i had a good talk with cakeandrevolution about it and i think the issue was that jobhaver didn’t differentiate between porn, the industry and smut, art created with erotic intent. like obviously nobody will do ‘sex work’ in an ideal world but erotic images, video, text, etc. will still exist for noncommercial reasons. is that what you were going to get at?

That’s the quickest explanation, of course. She’s a sex worker herself in a variety of ways that term can be applied, as well as an advocate for our homeless and such (running Trans Housing Network to boot). Her views here are shaped by wanting to abolish ALL labor, in the context of Marxist-Leninist ideas (I believe), which has a pretty specific vocabulary for the ways it talks about “work” that can frankly be kinda painful to wrap one’s head around (speaking for myself). Then it takes another step guided by her conviction that, yes, there is a special level of exploitation and harm associated both with having to do sex work, the way that work is commodified, and how it is consumed, which makes even most of what we might call erotic art now problematic at BEST and deserving of extreme vigilance. The reasons for that are another kettle of fish.

As an anarchist myself, I’ve got tons of disagreements with M-L comrades, not least of which is that whenever someone talks about political crimes, I always ask who’s doing the policing, who‘s doing the punishing, so on, but I confess that my main dog in this struggle here is defending someone I revere, not from disagreement (people can/should have those), but from misrepresentation of either her discourse or her character, which is easy for all of us to fall prey too, yeah?

I’d continue doing sex work in an ideal world.  I get to make dudes fuck bags filled with peanut butter, it’s fantastic and somebody has to do it, that said the sex industry as it stands and the way it is structured is deeply problematic.

Also knowing Jobhaver’s sense of humor… she’s probably at least kinda kidding.
