Yes, well, kind of, you can’t really enjoy the goth subculture if you go to a goth club and hate the music the DJ is playing, thus you cannot enjoy the atmosphere the music is creating so you’d be missing out on a HUGE element to the goth scene. So why no give a couple clubs a try?:D I find I enjoy MOST goth(or goth inclined) music while at the gothy clubs vs.my headphones. I find goth music (to me) can be hard to hear due to the way goth music is made(traditionally not electronically) with ear buds and the songs are sooooooo much more pleasant to dance to and enjoy while out on the dance floor! And that kids is what makes goth goth and what forms the binds of a community!:D
lol @ the idea that the goth subculture centers around clubs
Well, if you think about it, especially in big cities(I live in San Francisco for example) the scene does seem to come together during events, and weekly and monthly events hosted at clubs. And when groups of people come together like this, communities form. Like the BDSM community.
that’s a pretty small portion of the global subculture though.
Music is important. But so is literature and architecture and fine art. I think an effort to at least learn about the musical history of Goth culture is valuable.
The answer you lot should be giving is to like what you like and don’t worry about labels and boxes and people liking or not liking you based on music taste…
Well, yes, but when you identify with a predominantly music based subculture, some interest in the music I well expected. You miss out on what goth is when you aren’t interested or don’t like the music.
The person is 16… Asking if people will like them if they don’t fit in a box. This isn’t about being “goth”, it’s about giving decent advice to someone finding themselves.
I was trying to help them by suggesting them to go to clubs or goth events.I didn’t realize though they were 16 but the advice still holds true when they get older.
Plus like if you’re into more rock n’ rolly stuff, there’s like deathrock and horror punk.
Check out Christian Death, and Specimen and 45 Grave and Fields Of The Nephilim, hubby and I HATE EBM, but are big ol’ goths (who won’t go to a lot of goth nights because we ain’t about EBM)
