according to marx, a commodity is a thing that is useful and a product of human labor that exchanges on the market for something else
and it doesn’t have to be a physical object right? Services are commodities too right?
is a blowjob a comodity?
i mean usually no, because most people have sex (including oral sex) for free. But when you’re engaging in sex work, then a blowjob could be a commodity, a service in exchange for cash.
would this blowjob for money work under communism? 😀
That’s actually a really good question, and I have no idea. Like if we get to a truly post-scarcity communist society, then it seems like sex work wouldn’t even really make sense, especially if money simply no longer exists. No one would need to have sex for money to pay the rent and buy groceries. And if they are just a really horny person and want to have a lot of sex, then they can just go for it.
this would be nice.
there would be no situation under which I have to have to give a blowjob to someone I dislikeSex worker chiming in: Think of sex work as more like massage therapy. Or entertainment in the case of performers. Don’t think of it as something inherently bad that has to be done for money. It’s merely a service. I think it would absolutely still exist in a communist society, because there are people who would still want these services and there are would be people who enjoy providing them in a safe environment. It wouldn’t be for money but it would still be work. Also people who want sexual services usually can’t just go for it, hence their seeking the services in the first place. Physical intimacy is a commodity for many people. Yes, post scarcity people may have the option of not doing this work, but I would argue that many would still do it. The idea that they wouldn’t is akin to saying there would be no doctors under communism because there’s no large monetary incentive to become one. People do things that they love. They’re even more likely to do things that they love when capitalism isn’t holding them back. This has inspired me to write a longer essay on this topic.
I would very much like to read that essay once you finish it.
(i am a full service sex worker)
even in a post-scarcity world where everyone has literally every object they could want, there’s still going to be people who want sex outside of the paradigm of dating or hookups.
there are still going to be disabled people who are unable to masturbate and need external help.
there are still going to be people who are unable to find a partner or hookups who want sex.
i think even in a post-scarcity anarchist communist utopia with no cultural stigma surrounding sexuality whatsoever, there will still be a need for sex as a service. obviously to what degree and in what forms we really can only conjecture, but i think it’s foolish to say that sex work or something resembling sex work will simply cease to exist under socialism or communism.
@thepeacockangel you have things to say on this topic right ?
Basically people will still sometimes need sexual experiences that are entirely focused on them, and there will be people who will want to make all or part of their social contribution doing that, because they like helping people and feel good about doing the work and what not.
Like my nice clients? I like talking to them, and telling them creative stories and setting up weird fun roleplays with props and what not. If I didn’t have to support myself, I’d do it for free because I’m good at it, and empathizing with people and helping them out makes me feel useful
I know that I have some fairly elaborate sexual fantasies and have definitely purchased sexual services in the form of custom videos and what not to suit my own peculiar needs and like I feel like people will do that for other people after the revolution as a contribution to generally making people happier I guess.
