Responding to “consent is sexy” with “no, consent is mandatory” is weird?
Like food’s mandatory, you die without it, but also it can be delicious. Things can be both mandatory and at times enjoyable.
More than one adjective can correctly apply to a thing consent can be mandatory, sexy, hexagonal, almond flavored, fragrant and fresh-squeezed all at the same time
Yeah I sorta feel the same…. consent is obviously both sexy and mandatory but not just that, I feel like the choice of words is a little weird. Makes it sounds like it’s too big a deal? And obviously it is mandatory and a very big deal but it shouldn’t need to be. Like we shouldn’t have to make such a fuss about bodily autonomy, it should be obvious. To me the slogan “consent is mandatory” makes “not raping people” sound a little too special. Not raping people should not be fucking special. No gold stars for that. That’s a really fundamental human responsibility. Personally I’d just say “consent is fucking BASIC.”
And really the ideal slogan would be “don’t fucking rape people.” Cause we shouldn’t HAVE to say anything good about consent, consent isn’t a nice thing, it doesn’t make you a good person, it’s just how people are supposed to interact. I mean “consent is sexy” is like saying “it’s hot that you didn’t murder anyone today,” which is obviously ridiculous; but “consent is mandatory” is still like saying “you’re a good citizen because you didn’t murder anyone today,” which is only marginally less ridiculous. You shouldn’t get congratulated for not committing murder, and you shouldn’t get congratulated for not committing rape either. Neither of those things should be seen as accomplishments.
But I don’t think it’s congratulating anyone, I think it’s supposed to be dispelling the myth that it “ruins the moment” or whatever, it’s not difficult to do in reality, and can be fun, so that one particular excuse for not obtaining clear consent is shitty
