the main tendency of social justice discourse rather than uplift or inspire actual resistance to oppression serves as a soft power for oppression. Notice that any and all resistance is immediately shot down by the hyperconcern for any possible theoretical microharm that it could possibly create. A sortof “don’t rock the boat” mentality. While in theory this sounds like the most moral position and the one that has the best interests in mind for the oppressed, in practice it leads to a chilling effect of both talk of resistance, what needs to be done, and action, what is done. This mentality is even internalized by the oppressed. The sociologist moves into the part of the brain in the place once occupied by the police man.

The net result is merely the continued existence of oppression, but a better documented, more lamented, better analyzed oppression. Rather than stop the knife from plunging into the body, this tendency merely posits that the stabbed be paid attention to and that their cries of pain be listened to. The listeners feel like they have done enough simply by not being among those who ignored the screams.

If the stabbed fights back the crowd immediately turns away from them, unsure of the “right thing”to do, and no longer sees them as a subject worthy of defense for they are no longer an innocent object to be consumed by the viewer.

A total eruption of roles and hierarchies is needed. gradual liberation is a trap designed by those with power to keep those without from leaving their control.
