Has ever had an ideological split? Also like what is their ideology? Like anti-imperialist pro-democracy like ???
I think they’re classic liberals, who support imperialism
Also, they very much support humanocentrism and would more than likely be in favor of an authoritarian democracy, the chancellor being a benevolent dictator and the Gaalactic Senate acting like a politburo
In a way, they are no more than social democrats, who, while looking to overthrow the Empire, are not looking to dramatically change the system. They are radical reformists.
All of this.
“in favor of an authoritarian democracy, the chancellor being a
benevolent dictator and the Gaalactic Senate acting like a politburo“
This basically describes the Republic as it was prior to the Empire. The Rebel Alliance is the shorthand name for “The Alliance to Restore the Republic”. As Mon Mothma says in the deleted scenes of Episode 3, where the rebel alliance is being set up quietly by senators including herself, Bail Organa, and Padmé Amidala (who is so socially democratic it’s painful), “We are loyalists [to the Republic]”.
The Rebel Alliance isn’t a grassroots organisation. It is set up by an elite group of liberal politicians, concerned at the direct the senate is taking, wishing to preserve what was. They ultimately stand at the top of the Rebel Alliance hierarchy and have control over the political direction of the group.
However, it’s worth noting that the Alliance is split into multiple different cells in different geographical areas of the galaxy. It’s only until the Battle of Endor we actually see the various rebel factions unify together – hence why all the rebel ship designs are so varied and different, they’re each independent.
For this reason – the independence of these cells – I’m pretty confident that there might have been some factional disputes, where certain rebel cells are more radical than others. The whole thing is orchestrated by an elite class but that doesn’t mean it isn’t in the interests of the working class to overthrow the empire and I’m certain some groups of rebels would likely have a different political agenda to the mainstream. This is speculation, rather than proved in canon (as if they’d allow communists in star wars, that would involve having to take the politics seriously).
I wouldn’t be surprised if the rebels in Leia Organa’s resistance were a little more radical, though, since it was born out of frustration with the senate’s bureaucracy, and essentially is an organisation devoted to anti-fascism quite explicitly.
No wonder it ended up a lot like the German rev, the soc dems came to power, and whoops fascism.
