I wish this is true. It’s not. Wealth is not being transferred. Small sums of money that are basically insignificant to rich men are being paid to us (working class women) in exchange for our actual labor.

The $200-300 I get from a millionaire CEO once a month is putting absolutely no dent in his net wealth, nor is it making me rich in any sense of the word. My socioeconomic status has not changed. I still have to work the next day, and the day after that, and so on until I age out of the industry. If real wealth were being transferred, I’d fucking quit my criminalized stigmatized job yesterday, hop merrily upwards on the American socioeconomic ladder, and spend my days napping on the beach instead of stepping on old man balls and pretending to like it.

The whole rags-to-riches thing has maybe happened to a few dozen sex workers total, including Julia Robert’s character in Pretty Woman. I mean I don’t have the stats – nobody does because SW stats are all basically bullshit and nobody studies the right stuff with the right methodology – but most Americans die belonging to the same social class they were born into, and there’s no reason to think sex workers, largely marginalized people with zero institutional power, have it better.

Save a few privileged hobbyists who do it for kicks, we are working-class people from start to finish, and having wealthy clients doesn’t catapult us into personal affluence any more than it would for any other service worker (food, retail, etc) with wealthy customers. I probably get a bigger piece of the pie as an indie worker (and I’m still in “survival” territory here) but SWs who don’t get to keep everything they earn are even less likely to find themselves suddenly miraculously upper-middle class, even after years of hard work.

Sex work is not a Robin Hood type system. Your rich client? Still rich after he pays you. You? Probably still have to go to work next week, or the week after that. And I’m truly sorry. Capitalism sucks. Sex work has yet to dismantle it.

tagging @thepeacockangel and @clarawebbwillcutoffyourhead and @lorire-dorable cause they are good with actual class analysis. The tweet above is more like wishful thinking.

I agree that everyone hates us though, you got that part right.

I mean like I have it better than my buddies in retail but yeeeah like I’m working class, I’m probably going to stay working class, and like the ones who do get all “rags to riches” usually end up as madams or other members of the boss class… so like you stop being working class women.
