Abuse allegations have the potential to ruin lives but it’s typically the ones making the accusations who are ruined, not the ones doing the abusing.

This is true, but just a reminder that as a survivor, sometimes abusers make allegations of abuse. This is obviously not the case here, but my abuser did that to me, and I’ve seen it happen several other times and those allegations do ruin lives because abusers are charismatic and convincing.
