Call political correctness “common decency” post rubs me the wrong way because like yeah, PC is a shitty term but like “common decency” is SO easy to frame as pearl-clutching horror at someone using a naughty word.
It’s not. It’s not like IDK not swearing… or using “clean language” it’s a lot more like not screaming at your waiter in a restaurant. It’s not about “decency” it’s about not being a complete and utter ass.
idk i think of common decency as interchangeable with basic respect for humanity. like anything besides respect for other people’s lives and selves is not decent, or acceptable.
Yeah but decency has connotations about like “public indecency” or “indecent exposure” it’s associated with the prudish and censorious. It’s synonymous with obscenity and like… yeah I think the word decency is like unhelpful in this particular context.
Obscenity and indecency have connections with what is considered dirty/sexual/etc… and so like the people who are complaining about having to be PC are partially complaining cause they associate it with the same stuff that censors titties and bleeps out the word ‘shit’.
We have no desire to censor titties or bleep out swear words, we’re asking you not to be horrible to people, not to “dress decently” or any of that, y’ know?
