Magic I think is, essentially, processes by which we attempt to achieve various ends without a solid understanding of why what we’re doing will achieve those ends.

Like… IDK we didn’t understand what the physics behind ribbon curling (you know the kind you curl with scissors) until like 2015, but we did know that ribbon curled when you did the things… and like for a long time we didn’t understand why it was that forged iron implements got stronger when rapidly quenched in water, but like they did when we did the thing so we did the thing.

So magic is just us like… doing that basically and like we’re not sure which elements are important or why they work or how they work… or even 100% that they do work, but like… y’ know?

Theory:

So you know how Wiccans popularized that belief that if you curse someone it’ll bounce back on you?

Well witch bottles are such absurdly common archeological finds in England that it could be that curses don’t *naturally* bounce back on the caster, so much as England is fucking full of reflector systems and so you can’t throw a hex there without hitting one.
