Seriously, when upper class northern white people make fun of poor southern white people

and say shit like “cousin marrying ignorant hillbillies” you’re being really classist and honestly, trying to make yourself look good by trying to act like southerners are the only racist ones just makes the whole thing extra shitty.

Yr smug hatred of country music (which is deeply and intimately linked with blues, gospel and jazz influenced bluegrass) is ignorant.  Being smug and acting like you’re better for coming from above the Mason-Dixon and having gone to college, doesn’t mean you’re not a racist.  You are just as capable of being a murderous, racist piece of shit.

Racism is more overt in the south and more covert in the north, but there’s just about as much horrible shit up here, we’re just better at hiding it under a veneer of color blind bs.

Why Is a Cruel and Medieval Form of Child Punishment Making a Comeback?

I feel like the forcible cutting of someone’s hair, particularly the hair of women, gender non-conforming men, and femme non-binary people is a particularly symbolically pregnant form of violence.

I mean think of what Romney did in school to a gay class mate, think of the shaving of the heads of French sex workers (often innocent victims of rape or starvation) by people who were often trying to take attention away from their own nazi collaboration, think of the shocking scene of Cersei Lannister, the cutting of the hair of French aristocrats before the guillotine, the hair of viking thralls, the cutting off of Rastafarians’ sacred dreadlocks by racist police forces, the cutting off of the hair of black women and girls in racially charged incidents like these, the cutting of Native American student’s hair in residential schools

There is some particular symbolic importance to hair, in our society long hair is feminine, but also a symbol of a kind of rebellion or freedom.  Hair is sensual and yet in some ways perceived as a statement of aggression.

I don’t know.

Why Is a Cruel and Medieval Form of Child Punishment Making a Comeback?

The fact that the American Museum Of Natural History

has a section for indigenous American (north, south and central) peoples, African peoples, and Asian peoples, and none for European peoples feels… racist (and no not racist against white people), like artifacts and artworks that would be displayed in an art museum if they were from a European culture ending up in the museum of natural history, and like yes humans are a part of nature, but treating non-European peoples as a part of nature and excluding ourselves from that category feels like we’re treating everyone else as subhuman, or natural curiosities and I’m pretty sure that’s fucked up, like having exhibits on the human family would be okay if done right, but putting everybody who’s not European in the museum with the bones of extinct animals feels very objectifying… but on the other hand we love making displays all about us and treating our stuff as the only stuff worth considering .

IDK what’s appropriate, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t it.

Also I’m pretty sure a bunch of those artifacts are stolen… so… yeah.

But Seriously It’s Like

White people murder innocent black children, laugh and make jokes about it.

Result: White people produce an outpouring of donations and goodwill… for the murderer

Black people take some fucking lubriderm and calamine lotion without paying during riots incited by white brutality, and the pointless death of community members.

Result: White people clutch our pearls and scream “THESE PEOPLE ARE ANIMALS”

I mean murdering children is fine, but god forbid anyone ever steal a pack of gasex in case they get a funny tummy after visiting their aunt.  I mean should  a box of gasex ever be stolen we all know society will entirely collapse and we’ll all end up as host bodies for some kind of invading alien

As I said before, you know what?  You are owed that gasex, you should be getting that gasex for free because we owe you.  We owe you big time.

Basically the era where being thicker than a midget was a crime just because Africans happen to be thick. Sarah (Saartije) Baartman was a Khoisan (South African) woman who performed under the name “Hottentot Venus” in 19th century England and France. She is the original video vixen: discovered at home in South Africa during her late teens, she was offered money and fame in Europe as a singer and dancer. Little did she know that she would be exploited and put on display for everyone to gaze at her large butt, long clitoris/labia, small waist, big breast and kinky hair— all traits that are very common amongst Khoisan women. As her shows attracted more fans, she was forced against her will to have sex with men AND WOMEN who gave enough money to her exploiters. Sarah got none of the money, as she was once promised. After her act got old, she was forced into prostitution, where she died of std’s and alcoholism. The obsession with Saartije lasted after her death as well. For more than 100 years, visitors and “scientist” were able to examine her dissected body parts in Paris museums. The 19th century shapewear, the “bustle” was inspired by her in order to give european women her unique physique. Yes, an old school booty pop. On behalf of Nelson Mandela’s request, Paris returned Saartije’s remains to South Africa in 2002. Black men, it’s time that you start respecting the black woman’s body, because this act of objectifying it was taught to you. #sarahbaartman

my goodness. i know this and yet it’s still appalling.

Didn’t know the part about the bustle….

TALK ABOUT IT

The fact that because her name must have been too “complicated” for them, they chose to erase that, and westernize her by giving her an “American” one smh

This is very important, but bustles didn’t come into fashion until quite late in the 19th century, primarily in 1870s as an evolution of 1860s crinolines, and Saartije died in 1815.  Her effect on culture is vast and broad ranging, but there’s no evidence I can find to link the bustle to her.

The Phryne Fisher Mystery Books Are Fun But Like

The way all the commies and anarchists in the series are like “It’s okay you’re an aristocrat and have servants Phryne, your servants are happy in servitude and you’re a good lady, and on an individual level you’re always helping people (by putting them in a subservient position to you) UWU” gets a little trying.

Lin Chung may be the most racist attempt not to be racist in the history of the world.  Like the fetishizing there is just like… oh fuck, that’s intense.  This is so uncomfortable, I keep having to skip bits where Phryne plays white savior.

Their portrayal of gay and gender non-conforming people often feels like Kerry Greenwood angling for progressive points, and is often just… less than ideal.

That said… they’re fun and they’re kind of trying?  But like… oog
